bridge's fifth oldest surviving college filled with medieval charm.
Trinity Hall is one of Cambridge's Plague Colleges founded in the aftermath of the Black Death to train priests to replace those last in the pandemic.
History of Trinity Hall In the aftermath of the Black Death of 1348 England had a severe shortage of priests (priests were required to visit the sick as part of their duties and so a large proportion caught the plague and died). In Medieval England it was commonly believed that disease was sent by God to punish people for their sins. Thus, a pandemic was revealed to be a consequence of God’s anger. Thus, priests were seen to be vitally important at this time to save people. Consequently, William Bateman, Bishop of Norwich, founded Trinity Hall College in 1350 to train new priests in canon law to replace those who had died. Trinity Hall has remained in its original location for almost 700 years with many buildings in its front court, such as the Chapel and the Master’s Lodge date back to the 14th century. Very little of their original features remain, however, the medieval arches and windows reveal what the college may have looked like centuries ago. Famous Alumni Notable alumni of Trinity Hall include Arthur Middleton: who signed the American Declaration of Independence in 1776, Rachel Weisz: Academy Award winning actress and Stephen Hawking: infamous scientist.
